Survey: Most Teachers “Enthusiastic” About Common Core

Liana Heitin writes at the Education Week (10/8) “Teaching Now” blog that according to a new survey from Scholastic and the Gates Foundation, 97% of US teachers are aware of the Common Core Standards, and “73 percent of math, English, science, and social studies teachers” in Common Core states “say they are enthusiastic about” implementing them.

The Journal (10/7) also covers this survey, noting that the sponsors have only released “partial findings” of the survey. The piece points out that overall, elementary school teachers “were the most likely to express enthusiasm to researchers at 81 percent.”

MSNBC’s Jansing & Co. also covered this survey in a segment featuring Vicki Phillips, director of education for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Margery Mayer, president of the Scholastic Foundation. The conversation touches on the political controversy surrounding the Common Core Standards, teachers’ concerns about PD and resources to support them in their implementation, and the overall goals of the initiative.
